Alex Mercer: Welcome back. This is the Daily Sports Evening Edition for Thursday, January 08, 2026. I’m Alex Mercer, joined as always by Marcus Webb. We’ve got a massive night on the board, from the CFP Semifinals to high-stakes NHL action. No time to waste—let’s get into where we stand. Marcus Webb: Heavy action tonight, Alex. The board is moving fast, and we’re seeing some significant late-breaking value in the hockey markets.

Alex Mercer: Before we add to the portfolio, we need to check the receipts. Marcus, let’s do a roll call on the morning picks. First up, how’s that Miami vs. Ole Miss position looking for the CFP Semifinal?

Marcus Webb: It’s a firm **Hold**. As we sit here just before kickoff at 7:30 PM ET, OJ Frederique Jr. is officially cleared for the Hurricanes. That’s massive for their secondary. Meanwhile, Ole Miss is still finding their feet under interim coach Pete Golding. Miami is trading at 64 cents to cover that 3.5-point spread, and we like the stability there.

Alex Mercer: Copy that. What about the Heat and Bulls? We were looking at Miami -5.5 this morning.

Marcus Webb: That’s a **Double Down**. Even with Jaime Jaquez Jr. ruled out with that ankle, Coby White’s return for Chicago doesn’t offset the Bulls’ fatigue. They’re on a back-to-back and missing Josh Giddey and Jalen Smith. Polymarket is still lagging at -5.5 while Vegas has steamed to -7. If you can still get that 5.5 line before the 8:00 PM tip, take it.

Alex Mercer: Moving to the Midwest—Cavaliers at Timberwolves.

Marcus Webb: **Hold**. Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen are confirmed starters for Cleveland. Anthony Edwards is expected to go for Minnesota, but he’s clearly not 100%. We’re keeping our position on the Cavs +4.5. 

Alex Mercer: And the late-night shootout in Salt Lake City? Mavericks and Jazz.

Marcus Webb: That is another **Double Down**. The total is absolutely steaming toward 241.5 in traditional markets, but Polymarket is sitting at 236.5, trading at 62 cents. With Utah’s 27th-ranked defense and the Flagg-Davis duo for Dallas, this has 270-point potential. Lock it in before the 9:00 PM start.

Alex Mercer: Finally, the Wild vs. the Kraken on the ice.

Marcus Webb: **Hold**. Jesper Wallstedt is confirmed in net for Minnesota. The Wild have owned this series recently, and their defensive metrics since November are elite. We’re staying the course for the 10:00 PM puck drop.

Alex Mercer: Alright, the portfolio is set, but we’ve got three late adds to round out the night. Marcus, let’s start with the Sabres and Rangers.

Marcus Webb: This is a pure value play. The Buffalo Sabres are trading at 53 cents on the moneyline against the Rangers. Why? Because New York just lost Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox indefinitely. The Sabres are 11-1 in their last 12 and they get to face Jonathan Quick tonight. The market is still pricing the Rangers based on their name, not their current depleted roster. This game starts at 7:00 PM ET—move quickly.

Alex Mercer: I love that. Now, let's head to Charlotte. Pacers and Hornets.

Marcus Webb: We’re taking the Hornets -4.5, trading at 50 cents. Indiana is currently on a franchise-record 13-game losing streak and they are a disastrous 1-16 on the road. Charlotte is healthy, LaMelo Ball is rolling, and they’ve been excellent on back-to-backs. Tip-off is at 7:00 PM ET.

Alex Mercer: And finally, Marcus, give us the Dog of the Day.

Marcus Webb: The **Dog of the Day** is the Vancouver Canucks on the moneyline, currently trading at 42 cents against the Red Wings. Vancouver is on a four-game skid, which is why we’re getting this price, but Thatcher Demko is capable of stealing any game, and Detroit’s 5-on-5 metrics have been bottom-tier lately. If Demko finds his December form tonight, the Canucks at +138 are a steal. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM ET.
